The measure was rejected in March by Kansas’ Democratic governor, Laura Kelly.
According to a story in the Kansas Reflector, one Democratic legislator in the state was not pleased when her peers voted to overturn the rejection of a measure prohibiting transgender pupils from engaging in females’ sports.
Kansas’ Republican-controlled legislature overrode Democratic governor Laura Kelly’s rejection of HB2238 on Wednesday. Both chambers of the legislature had Republican majorities.
According to the story, after the Kansas House voted to overturn the veto by a large margin (84-40), Democratic Representative Susan Ruiz rose up on the platform and called her Republican peers “full of s—.”
According to the story, Ruiz’s profane response stemmed from her overhearing Republicans laughing following the vote. She said one of the Republicans in the room was “gloating” when he entered the room.
Democrat Rep. Heather Meyer, who allegedly has a transgender kid, donned a shirt reading “protect trans youth” in the House floor.
On February 23, the state House of Representatives passed the measure with the backing of all Republicans and one Democrat. It was approved by the Senate on March 13, but Kelly rejected it on March 17.
Kelly has now rejected a prohibition on transgender pupils engaging in women’s athletics for three consecutive years.
Kelly told media after the override, “It kind of breaks my heart.” “It is very disheartening. For some members of the legislature, this was an extremely challenging choice, and I believe it is a decision they will come to lament as they reflect on their time in office.
She went on to say, “This is kind of a moral values vote.” They chose contrary to their own morals and beliefs, in my opinion. That’s going to cause them a lot of trouble in the long run.
