Despite escalating pressure from the White House, Senate Democrats once again refused a Republican proposal aimed at resuming federal operations.
Republicans had put forward a “clean” continuing resolution meant to restore funding through Nov. 21 without policy riders. But Democrats maintained that any funding bill must include an extension of expiring Obamacare subsidies and other priorities.
The vote—coming on the eighth day of the shutdown—emerged as a clear test of resolve. While the White House warned of consequences for federal workers and deferred services, the Democratic leadership held that they would not yield on key demands.
With no agreement in sight, the shutdown continues, leaving federal agencies idle and embattled leaders scrambling for leverage ahead of looming deadlines.
