House Judiciary Committee member Jerry Nadler is demanding an official investigation after a staffer from his Manhattan office was briefly detained by agents from the Department of Homeland Security. The incident has ignited sharp backlash from top Democrats who are accusing the Trump administration of politically motivated intimidation.

According to staff inside Nadler’s office, DHS agents entered the premises without presenting a warrant and accused them of harboring individuals allegedly connected to recent protests. A female aide was handcuffed during the encounter, prompting alarm and immediate demands to see legal documentation, which agents reportedly failed to provide.

Nadler described the episode as a “clear abuse of power,” citing the constitutional protections afforded to congressional offices. He has called on House leadership to initiate a formal investigation into the conduct of the agents involved and their possible motivations.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the incident, calling it a deliberate act of intimidation against Democratic officials. They pointed to what they described as an alarming trend of aggressive federal tactics under the Trump administration.

While DHS later claimed the agents were responding to intelligence concerning security threats, Democratic leaders remain unconvinced and are pressing for transparency and accountability in the wake of the confrontation. The event has deepened partisan tensions, with lawmakers now weighing whether additional legislative oversight is needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
