Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident deported to El Salvador in March, is now facing renewed scrutiny after court records revealed disturbing allegations of domestic abuse by his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura.
According to protective orders filed in 2020 and 2021, Vasquez Sura accused Abrego Garcia of violent behavior, including kicking, slapping, punching, and detaining her. One filing claims he threatened to kill her and boasted he could get away with it. The documents describe repeated physical attacks and emotional intimidation during their relationship.
Abrego Garcia was removed from the United States despite being granted protection from deportation in 2019 through a legal status known as “withholding of removal.” His deportation has been attributed to an administrative error, prompting a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court ordering the government to facilitate his return.
However, the Trump administration has resisted that order, citing concerns over public safety and alleged gang connections—allegations that Abrego Garcia and his legal team deny.
The case has now escalated into a broader legal showdown over executive authority, with accusations that the administration is defying court mandates and bypassing due process. While the legal standoff continues, Abrego Garcia remains detained in a Salvadoran facility.
