Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has strongly criticized Representative Ilhan Omar’s recent speech, calling for severe consequences such as expulsion from Congress, revocation of her citizenship, and deportation. Some have criticized Omar’s speech, claiming that she showed a stronger allegiance to Somalia, her country of birth, rather than the United States.

Omar’s speech, given on January 27, quickly gained widespread attention as she made a strong commitment to her constituents. She vowed to leverage her influence to prevent the Republic of Somaliland from entering into a sea-access agreement with Ethiopia.

In a translated clip of Omar’s speech shared by DeSantis, she confidently assures the audience that she will protect Somalia’s waters from any potential threats, emphasizing her commitment to the country’s safety during her time in the U.S. Congress. Rest assured; I am committed to safeguarding Somalia’s interests from within the U.S. system.

The comments received widespread backlash, as critics accused Omar of placing her loyalty to Somalia above that of the United States. DeSantis expressed his strong stance on the matter, stating, “Congress should take action to remove, revoke citizenship, and deport!”

Omar, who escaped Somalia with her family in 1991 and spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp before coming to the U.S. in 1995, has challenged the accuracy of the translation of her remarks, stating that they were “not only biased but completely inaccurate.”

She has strongly defended her position, emphasizing the importance of a nation’s unity and the need for the federal government’s consent in land lease negotiations with other countries. Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora are coming together in a collective effort, and I express my support for their cause.

Later, Omar appeared to indirectly address DeSantis’ comments by mentioning his rumored presidential campaign aspirations and characterizing it as a preparation for future failures.

This development contributes to the ongoing political debate regarding national loyalty and the responsibilities of elected officials in the United States. Fox News Digital has contacted Omar’s campaign for additional comments regarding the matter.
