Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently delivered a scathing critique of technology industry leaders for their subservient behavior towards Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This criticism was voiced during a campaign event, where DeSantis also commented on the deteriorating conditions in San Francisco.
Governor DeSantis highlighted the stark contrast in San Francisco’s handling of its local issues when a high-profile visitor like Xi Jinping arrives. He pointed out how the city, which usually struggles with issues like public defecation, rampant drug use, and soaring crime rates, suddenly transformed. The streets were cleaned, homelessness was temporarily addressed, and crime seemed to diminish, all in preparation for Xi’s visit and a high-level meeting including President Joe Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
DeSantis specifically targeted American CEOs for what he perceived as their undue deference to Xi Jinping. He expressed concern over the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the United States and criticized American executives for seemingly prioritizing their financial interests over national well-being. He accused these leaders of aiding an adversary, thereby compromising American interests.
The Florida Governor emphasized the dangers of economic dependence on China, particularly in critical sectors like technology. He argued that such reliance poses a significant threat to national security and overall American welfare. To counter this, DeSantis proposed a strategic shift in supply chains, advocating for their relocation back to the United States or to nations that are allies of the U.S.
His comments underscore a growing sentiment about the need for greater independence from China, especially in vital economic and technological areas. DeSantis, hinting at his potential future presidency, stressed the importance of reducing reliance on China, declaring it a grave mistake and highlighting the need for a strategic reorientation in American economic policies.
