In a significant turn of events for the 2024 Republican primary, former Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the suspension of his presidential campaign. This development narrows the field, leaving former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as the primary contenders. DeSantis made his announcement through a video message from Florida, just days before the New Hampshire primary.
DeSantis acknowledged the challenges of his campaign, stating, “If there were any actions I could take to ensure success, such as additional campaign stops or interviews, I would pursue them. Unfortunately, with no viable path to victory, I cannot in good conscience ask our supporters to continue investing their time and resources.” His decision follows poll predictions of a distant third-place finish in New Hampshire.
Currently, Trump leads the delegate count from the Iowa caucuses with 20 delegates, followed by DeSantis with 9, Haley with 8, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy with 3. A total of 1,215 delegates is required to secure the nomination, with 2,389 delegates still available.
A CNN and University of New Hampshire survey shows Trump maintaining a lead in New Hampshire with 50% support. Haley, previously the Trump administration’s UN ambassador, follows with 39%, while DeSantis has seen a decline to 6%.
As the New Hampshire primary approaches, Haley has received several key endorsements. The Boston Globe offered a lukewarm endorsement, praising Haley while expressing reservations about Trump. The New Hampshire Union Leader was more enthusiastic, describing Haley as a dynamic candidate capable of outshining figures from the past two administrations.
Haley’s campaign is launching a significant three-minute TV ad featuring Cindy Warmbier, mother of the late Otto Warmbier, who died following imprisonment in North Korea. The ad critiques Trump’s approach to the North Korea issue, highlighting his exoneration of Kim Jong-un for Warmbier’s death.
Endorsing Haley, the New Hampshire Union Leader praised her as a fresh and impactful presence in the Republican race, saying, “The era of political dinosaurs is over, and Nikki Haley is the transformative force to usher in a new chapter.”
With Trump’s commanding lead and Haley’s growing support, the upcoming New Hampshire primary presents a crucial and dynamic stage in the Republican nomination battle, signaling a pivotal moment in the race.
