Abigail Disney, a self-proclaimed Patriotic Millionaire and granddaughter of Roy O. Disney, found herself in the midst of controversy when she was arrested during a climate protest at an airport in the Hamptons. Joined by members of various organizations advocating for climate action, Disney and the protesters aimed to challenge the airport’s use by the wealthy elite.
Their demonstration involved blocking the main entrance of the East Hampton Airport, which predominantly serves private jet and charter flights. The protesters sought to disrupt the exclusive vacations of wealthy individuals who contribute to the climate crisis through their investments in fossil fuels and polluting activities. Disney expressed her own views on the matter, acknowledging the difficulty of giving up luxuries like private jets while emphasizing the urgent need for change in light of escalating environmental issues.
Photos and videos captured the scene as Disney and fellow protesters formed a blockade at the airport’s entrance, drawing attention to the carbon footprint associated with private air travel. The airport is situated in the upscale community of the Hamptons, which is renowned for its affluent residents and celebrities.
Teddy Ogborn, an organizer from Planet Over Profit who participated in the protest and was also arrested, emphasized the role of the 1% in exacerbating the climate crisis and vowed to escalate actions against them until significant changes are made.
Abigail Disney is no stranger to public protests, having previously been involved in demonstrations against The Walt Disney Company. She co-directed a film called “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,” which critically examines the treatment of theme park Cast Members by the company. Her activism extends to advocating for leftist social positions and urging corporations, including Disney, to embrace authenticity, generosity, joy, and decency in the face of right-wing agendas.
These recent events highlight Disney’s commitment to using her platform and influence to address societal and environmental issues, even if it means challenging the practices of powerful entities.
