Disney faced a reversal of its initial claim as it backtracked on its denial of the authenticity of photos showcasing Snow White’s new companions, previously referred to as the seven dwarfs. The correction notice issued by the company cited a “misunderstanding” and acknowledged that the images were indeed from their production, albeit not official.

The controversy stemmed from an article published by the Daily Mail, offering readers an exclusive glimpse into Disney’s live-action adaptation of the beloved film. The outlet accused Disney of succumbing to political correctness by transforming the iconic characters into “magical creatures.”

Conservative voices expressed their dissatisfaction with the altered portrayal of the dwarfs, prompting inquiries from the Daily Beast. Initially, a Disney spokesperson informed the publication that the photos were fraudulent and sought a correction. However, Disney later revised their stance and clarified that while the photos were indeed from the production, they were not official images.

The decision to modify the depiction of the dwarfs was motivated by a desire to avoid perpetuating stereotypes associated with the original animated film. Disney stated that they had engaged in consultations with members of the dwarfism community to develop a fresh approach for these characters.

In January 2022, Disney had previously announced their intention to replace the term “seven dwarfs” with “magical creatures,” following criticisms raised by actor Peter Dinklage, known for his role in “Game of Thrones,” who has dwarfism. The aim was to foster inclusivity and steer clear of reinforcing stereotypes that were prevalent in the original animated version.

As the film moves into production after an extensive development period, Disney remains committed to sharing more details and showcasing the alternative portrayal of these iconic characters.
