A violent demonstration broke out Tuesday evening outside a hotel in Saggart, just outside Dublin, where asylum seekers are being housed, following the arrest of a 26-year-old suspect accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old Irish girl in state care.
Crowds of up to 2,000 gathered, many waving Irish flags and chanting anti-migrant slogans. The situation escalated when protesters threw bricks, fireworks and glass bottles at officers from the Garda Síochána (Irish national police) and set fire to a police van stationed at the scene.
Six individuals were arrested by law-enforcement and one female officer suffered a foot injury amid the unrest. Authorities pointed to “sustained attacks” by the crowd and described the on-site violence as a calculated attempt to intimidate officers and threaten public order.
Government ministers and senior police officials condemned the disorder as unacceptable, stressing that while peaceful protest is legitimate, violence and targeting of migrant-related accommodation will not be tolerated.
