Elon Musk has openly disputed Robert De Niro’s recent comments that compared former President Donald Trump to dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. During an MSNBC interview, De Niro voiced serious concerns about Trump’s influence and potential reelection, invoking comparisons with notorious fascist leaders to underline the perceived danger.
De Niro remarked, “Trump can’t be anywhere near the office of the presidency,” labeling him “sick” and “narcissistic.” He drew parallels between public perceptions of Trump and historical reactions to Hitler and Mussolini, suggesting that like those figures, Trump was initially not taken seriously despite the apparent threats they posed.
Musk responded to De Niro’s comments on the social media platform X, challenging the analogy between Trump and the fascist leaders. He argued, “Well, Trump was actually already president for 4 years and his policies bore no resemblance to those of Hitler, so this makes no sense.” Musk defended Trump’s tenure by citing foreign policy moves like the Abraham Accords, which aimed to foster peace in the Middle East, contrasting them with the aggressive, expansionist policies of Hitler.
This is not the first time De Niro has criticized Trump; he has been a vocal opponent, notably during the 2018 Tony Awards with a direct rebuke. Musk’s critique of De Niro’s comparison underscores a broader debate about the use of historical analogies in political rhetoric, reflecting deep divisions in public opinion on Trump’s presidency and its implications for American democracy.
