Elon Musk has sharply criticized President Trump’s newly passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” calling it a reckless and bloated piece of legislation that threatens to worsen the national deficit.
The bill, which cleared the House, includes over $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, an extension of Trump’s 2017 tax plan, and new measures such as eliminating taxes on tips. It also significantly boosts defense and border security spending, allocating $150 billion for military expansion and $350 billion for enhanced border enforcement.
To balance the bill’s cost, lawmakers proposed trimming key social programs, including Medicaid and SNAP, and raising the debt ceiling by $4 trillion. The legislation also includes a wave of infrastructure investments, but critics say many provisions amount to political giveaways.
Musk, who recently stepped down from his advisory role in the Department of Government Efficiency, voiced his frustration online, warning that the bill could push the federal deficit to $2.5 trillion and saddle future generations with an unsustainable burden.
Opposition has emerged from both parties. Senator Rand Paul raised concerns about fiscal responsibility, while Senate Democrats criticized the bill’s impact on low-income families. Still, Trump remains optimistic, urging the Senate to pass the bill by July 4 and highlighting its promise to boost economic growth.
House Speaker Mike Johnson defended the measure, dismissing Musk’s criticism and insisting the bill honors core campaign commitments. As Senate debate looms, the bill’s future — and its impact on the U.S. economy — remains uncertain.
