Recent polls have shown Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown trailing his Republican challenger, Bernie Moreno, marking a significant shift in what has long been considered a competitive race. According to two recent surveys, Moreno now holds a narrow lead over Brown, with the ActiVote poll showing Moreno ahead by 2.2 points, and the RMG Research poll showing a 2-point advantage for Moreno.
These results have alarmed Ohio Democrats, with the state party expressing concern in a campaign fundraising email, saying, “This is bad.” Brown, a powerful Democratic figure in a state that has increasingly leaned Republican, had previously maintained a slim lead in earlier polls. The RealClearPolitics polling average still gives Brown a 3.8-point edge, but the recent data indicates the race has tightened significantly.
Analysts attribute Moreno’s surge to three key factors: his alignment with former President Donald Trump, who leads Vice President Kamala Harris by 6 points in Ohio, the state’s focus on economic issues, and Moreno’s strong stance on immigration reform. Moreno has positioned himself as the candidate of economic growth and job creation, appealing to inflation-weary voters while holding onto Trump’s base with his tough stance on immigration.
Brown’s potential loss would be another blow to Ohio’s once-swing-state status, as Republicans now control all three branches of state government, as well as key statewide offices. Despite this, Ohio Democrats had hoped Brown’s historically strong numbers, coupled with recent progressive victories on issues like marijuana legalization, could indicate the state was not entirely lost to the GOP.
With less than a month until Election Day, the race remains a toss-up, but the recent polling trends suggest an uphill battle for Brown as Moreno continues to gain momentum.
