Former White House spokesperson Ian Sams acknowledged Thursday that during his tenure he met with President Joe Biden in person only a few times—contradicting his earlier on-camera remark that he dealt with the president “every single day.”
In a 2024 television interview, Sams described Mr. Biden as fully alert and responsive in their interactions. But during his August testimony before the House Oversight Committee, Sams said he had met with Mr. Biden “a handful of times” over nearly two years—some meetings conducted virtually—and could not substantiate how frequently he saw the president.
Sams defended his previous statement, saying it reflected his personal encounters rather than claiming daily contact. Still, committee members pressed him on whether his initial description might have misled the public. Sams maintained he had been honest about his experience, though critics say the discrepancy raises further questions about the president’s accessibility and involvement in decision-making.
