New York City police released disturbing new surveillance images and identified 42-year-old Jamel McGriff as a suspect in the brutal deaths of Frank and Maureen Olton, ages 76 and 77, in Queens. Authorities allege McGriff used deceit to enter the couple’s home by claiming he needed to charge his phone.
Surveillance video places him arriving around 10:18 a.m., asking for help from neighbors, then gaining access to the Olton residence through the backyard. He was later seen leaving with two bags at about 3:00 p.m.
Emergency responders were alerted to a fire at the home. When firefighters extinguished it, victims were discovered inside: Frank was found in the basement, tied to a pole and stabbed multiple times; Maureen was discovered on the first floor with severe burns. The fire was ruled intentional.
McGriff is considered armed and dangerous. He has a lengthy criminal history, including time served for robbery, sexual assault, and assault. Police say he was released on parole in 2023, but has since been linked to multiple robberies and failed to register as a sex offender.
Law enforcement has asked for the public’s help locating McGriff, warning residents not to let strangers into their homes and urging anyone with information to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers immediately.
