A former California Democrat has publicly proclaimed her decision to join the Republican Party, citing her frustration with Vice President Kamala Harris’s perceived inaction on educational reform during her years in California politics. Gloria Romero, who was previously the Democratic Majority Leader of the California State Senate, recently disclosed her decision to transfer parties. She contended that Harris failed to adequately address critical issues within the state’s education system.

Romero criticized Harris, who served as the Attorney General of California prior to his election as a U.S. Senator, for his failure to effect significant changes in the public education system. Harris did not take significant measures to improve the quality of education for California’s students, particularly in underfunded and underperforming districts, despite the numerous opportunities to support educational reforms, according to Romero.

Romero expressed her dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s approach to education in an interview, emphasizing its close relationship with teachers’ unions, which she alleges have frequently undermined essential reforms. She contended that this dynamic has resulted in a significant number of students being deprived of the resources necessary for success and access to high-quality education.

Romero, a seasoned proponent of accountability and school choice in education, characterized her decision to swap parties as a testament to her dedication to identifying innovative solutions to the obstacles that California’s educational institutions encounter. She asserted that the Republican Party’s perspective on education reform, charter schools, and school choice is more consistent with her desire to enhance educational opportunities.

The ongoing debate over education policy in California and across the country is underscored by Romero’s decision, which has elicited varied reactions from both Democrats and Republicans. While some have lauded her for advocating for students and parents, others perceive her decision as a departure from her previous political affiliations.

The broader dissatisfaction among some former Democrats who believe that their party has not adequately addressed important issues such as education reform is underscored by Romero’s transition to the Republican Party. Her departure is anticipated to heighten the discourse regarding the two main political parties’ divergent perspectives on the most effective methods for delivering high-quality education to all students, as discussions regarding school policy continue to gain momentum.
