Former FBI Director James Comey publicly criticized a team of prosecutors overseeing a high-profile beauty-queen case, calling their credentials inadequate and expressing concern over their handling of evidence.
At a legal symposium in Washington, Comey stated that two of the prosecutors working on the case lacked significant trial experience and questioned their decision to proceed with charges without rectifying a foundational evidence documentation issue. He noted this creates “avoidable risks” for a case already under national spotlight.
The criticism comes as the defendants—two former beauty-pageant winners—face charges related to alleged fraud and misrepresentation. Comey’s remarks reflect his broader concern about prosecutorial standards and trial readiness in politically charged cases.
Prosecutors defended their team, citing long-standing service and successful case histories in different jurisdictions. They also highlighted that the case in question is supported by forensic accounting work and sealed subpoenas.
Legal analysts said Comey’s comments may increase pressure on senior justice officials to assess whether the case should continue as currently structured or be refunctioned under more experienced hands.
