Former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding has been returned to the United States after his arrest in Mexico, marking his first appearance on U.S. soil since authorities accused him of leading a violent international drug trafficking operation.
Wedding, who competed for Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics, is accused by federal prosecutors of running a large-scale cocaine distribution network that operated across borders for years. Investigators allege the organization moved significant quantities of narcotics, generated millions in illegal profits, and relied on violence and intimidation to protect its operations.
According to law enforcement officials, Wedding is also linked to multiple killings, including the alleged murder of a federal witness, as well as other acts of violence tied to the drug enterprise. Authorities say he used false identities and remained on the run for more than a decade before being located and detained abroad.
Following his arrest, Wedding was transported under heavy security and turned over to U.S. federal custody, where he is expected to face charges including murder conspiracy, drug trafficking, and operating a criminal enterprise. Court proceedings are expected to begin soon.
The investigation into Wedding’s alleged activities has already led to numerous arrests and the seizure of drugs, weapons, cash, and other assets connected to the network, according to officials, who describe the case as one of the most significant takedowns involving a former professional athlete.
