Taylor Bentley, a Utah resident standing about 15 to 20 yards from Charlie Kirk during his appearance at Utah Valley University, has shared a harrowing account of the moment Kirk was fatally shot.
Bentley said he initially thought what he heard was a dramatic effect—maybe part of the act—and didn’t believe it was real. But when Kirk slumped back and blood poured from his neck, the reality hit immediately.
Bentley and friends dropped to the ground. In a mix of shock and fear, they stayed low about 15 seconds before people started fleeing toward nearby buildings. They sheltered there for approximately 20 minutes, shaken but safe.
By that point, Bentley said several witnesses were already convinced that Kirk’s injuries were life-threatening. “We knew immediately that Charlie wasn’t going to make it,” he recalled.
Bentley praised the public statements from community figures in the days since as helpful, especially those urging calm and condemnation of violence. The shooting has left many grappling with how violence unfolded in such a public setting.
