Eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel was among the two children fatally shot during a tragic mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. His father, Jesse Merkel, delivered an emotional statement grieving the loss:
“Yesterday, a coward took our 8-year-old son, Fletcher, away from us. We’ll never hold him, talk to him, play with him, or watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was meant to be.”
Jesse fondly described Fletcher’s passions—cooking, sports, family—and expressed hope that his family may eventually find healing. He added:
“I pray the other victim’s family can also find healing someday. And I ask you to remember Fletcher for the joy he brought, not just the tragedy that ended his life.”
The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire during the Mass, taking their own life afterward. Investigations are ongoing, and community members continue to rally around the grieving families.
