According to Barry Borgen, Jews in New York are disregarding the violence directed against their community.
On Monday, the father of a Jewish boy who was attacked in 2021 slammed Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Jerry Nadler for not responding to his desire that the perpetrators of the incident be given a fair term.
On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee held a field hearing in New York City, where witnesses included Barry Borgen and other victims of violent crime. Borgen criticized Nadler, the committee’s top Democrat, for failing to assist his son.
Borgen said to Nadler, “You’re a Jewish New Yorker,” addressing Nadler directly. I know your office gets a lot of calls. A lot of my New York City phone calls went to the office of Mr. Schumer, who is also Jewish.
“No one got back to us,” Borgen added. “You both avoided answering my questions concerning my son’s disappearance. How about that? You’re a New Yorker who also happens to be Jewish. You have Jewish ancestry, right?
Borgen said that his son was attacked “in broad daylight” at Times Square in 2021 because he was wearing a yarmulke and attending a pro-Israel rally.
He blamed Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg for delaying what should be a “open and shut case.” Borgen said that Bragg provided a “sweetheart deal” to one of the individuals responsible for his son’s injuries. Since then, this individual has been overheard vowing to repeat the abuse on his kid.
Borgen added that Jewish New York Democrats like Schumer and Nadler, who are pushing for tougher sentences, would likely speed up the case. “And here Bragg is just dragging this case along with no solution, making deal after deal,” Borgen said.
Borgen suggested that a statement condemning the beating of Borgen’s kid would have helped Mr. Bragg take the situation more seriously. He said that since they keep to themselves, Bragg can “just do whatever he wants to do.”
Borgen continued, “And I call you out on it,” when Schumer and Nadler remained silent. “Most of my friends are so upset with you and Mr. Schumer that you don’t get it,” she told him.
Senator Schumer was absent from the meeting, and Rep. Nadler did not respond to questions from Borgen.
Because violence is increasing and lawyers like Bragg aren’t performing their duties, Borgen says he’s scaling back his activities in Manhattan. He said that many of his Florida-bound buddies have firearms at their disposal, but New Yorkers do not.
To paraphrase, “We can’t get guns in New York,” he remarked. It’s insane that killers are free to roam and shoot at will, and that they may easily obtain firearms. And Mr. Bragg is being accused of carrying a firearm. It’s not a major problem because it’s only a misdemeanor.
As he put it, “I won’t step foot in Manhattan.”
