A 22-year-old expectant father died on October 8 after suffering critical injuries in a February car crash in Florida. His name was Daniel Waterman. While hospitalized, he regained consciousness from a coma long enough to inform investigators that his 24-year-old girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, had intentionally driven their vehicle into a tree during an argument in Flagler County.
Waterman told police that the crash followed a dispute after he discovered Mumby’s pregnancy and received a text message from another woman. He claimed the vehicle sped up to about 90 mph without braking, and Mumby allegedly said: “You’ll get what you deserve.”
Mumby, who was pregnant at the time and also injured in the crash, was originally charged with reckless driving and aggravated battery. After Waterman’s death, authorities upgraded her charge to vehicular homicide. She has pleaded not guilty.
Waterman’s family described the collision as a violent act rather than an accident and are now fighting for custody of the unborn child, asserting that the baby’s father would have wanted her raised with his family in New York.
