Federal agents have arrested 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. in connection with the placement of pipe bombs outside the headquarters of both major political parties in Washington, D.C., an incident that occurred just before the January 6 Capitol riot.
Investigators say the arrest follows a multi-year probe that utilized cellphone location data, license-plate reader logs, surveillance video reviews, and purchase records for bomb-making materials. These combined leads reportedly pointed to Cole as the primary suspect.
The two explosive devices were discovered on January 5, 2021, near key political buildings. Both were assessed as functional, though they never detonated, and law enforcement evacuated the area at the time of discovery.
Cole is now facing federal charges including transporting and placing improvised explosive devices. Prosecutors have suggested additional charges may be forthcoming as the full scope of evidence is reviewed.
Authorities said the breakthrough came not from outside tips — despite a longstanding $500,000 reward — but through persistent analysis of digital and physical clues gathered over thousands of hours of investigation.
The arrest brings the investigation into one of the most notorious unsolved cases linked to the January 6 events closer to resolution and offers a rare moment of closure for investigators and the public alike.
