On Thursday, an IT coworker was arrested in connection with the killing of Cash App founder Bob Lee in downtown San Francisco.
The 43-year-old father of two was stabbed in the exclusive Rincon Hill neighborhood at about 2:30 a.m. on April 4.
The cops say that Nima Momeni, who is 38 years old, has been arrested and charged with murder.
At a news meeting on Thursday, Chief William Scott of the San Francisco Police Department said, “We can confirm that Mr. Lee and Mr. Momeni knew each other,” but officials wouldn’t say anything else.
Scott disagreed with the idea that Lee’s murder shows that the city is dangerous. He said that the murder “is not about San Francisco,” which means that it was a personal matter.
“Most people who commit murder know the victims personally,” he said.
DA Brooke Jenkins said that she would ask for Momeni’s bail to be denied because he poses “clear and serious risks to public safety.”
Tech billionaire Lee and Expand IT’s CEO Momeni were allegedly in a car together when they got into a fight that made Lee get out of the car.
Police sources told the Mission Local that Momeni got back into the fight and killed Lee with a knife on a quiet street.
Scott wouldn’t say if the murderer’s knife had been found or not.
Police in San Francisco said they would share more information about the suspected murder later on Thursday, including what they found out about why it happened.
The sad CCTV video, which hasn’t been released to the public yet, shows the dying boss walking up to a car with its hazards on and lifting his shirt to show the driver how badly he was hurt.
Local news sites said they had seen the film of Lee falling to the ground before the car drove away.
From the video, it’s hard to tell if the red car Lee walked up to was the suspect’s car or just a random one.
Lee called 911 and said he had been stabbed. He is the father of two young girls. When the cops came, he was already unconscious from being sliced, and he later died from his wounds.
Sam Singer, who runs a PR firm next door to Momeni’s loft and told The Post about the police raid, said that cops from both San Francisco and Emeryville had come to the building and used a bullhorn to call the accused killer.
“Everyone is shocked that he’s been accused of this murder,” Singer said of the suspected killer to The Post. “His pool table was top-of-the-line, his food was delicious, and his sound system was the latest and greatest. His office was full of cutting-edge machines. I was given his contact information and told to call him if I ever needed help with IT.
The woman called out to Momeni from inside the building on April 3, about 24 hours before Lee was killed.
“She knocked on another door looking for him,” Singer said. “The security committee in the building brought it up because there was a question about why a woman was there in the early morning yelling for Nima and how she got into a secure building.”
A friend of Lee’s said that the tech mogul just moved to Miami because he thought San Francisco was “deteriorating.” Lee’s last job was with the bitcoin company MobileCoin.
Jake Shields, an MMA star and close friend, wrote right after the murder, “He was in the “good” part of town and seemed to have been the target of a random mugging or attack.”
After the murder, the police didn’t want to say anything about possible suspects or how their case was going.
This week, San Francisco Mayor London Breed told ABC News, “When some of the facts… come out, people are going to be surprised.” But Mayor Breed also said that people shouldn’t “jump to conclusions” in cases like this one because San Francisco has a number of high-crime areas.
Rick Lee wrote a touching post about his late son on Facebook. He called him his “best friend.”
“Bob would give you the shirt off his back,” the worried father wrote. He had a strict rule that he would never judge anyone, and he never did.
