On Friday afternoon, a tour bus traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City collided on Interstate 90 close to Pembroke, east of Buffalo. Five people were killed and about two dozen passengers were injured when the car swerved off the road, over the median, and flipped.
Multiple medical helicopters and ambulance personnel rushed wounded to nearby hospitals as emergency services worked quickly. While other patients were spread across area healthcare facilities, Erie County Medical Center reported treating 24 patients, including trauma cases.
Both mechanical failure and driver impairment have been ruled out by state police. The driver of the bus, which was run by a tour firm based in Staten Island, became preoccupied and overcorrected, which resulted in the rollover at approximately 12:30 p.m. A team from the National Transportation Safety Board has been sent to look into the collision.
