A longtime Florida deputy was killed and two others were wounded when what began as a standard eviction service erupted into gunfire inside a gated community on Friday morning. Authorities say the incident unfolded as deputies arrived at a residence to carry out a court-ordered eviction requested by the suspect’s mother.
The deputy, a 25-year veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, entered the home alongside another deputy and a locksmith who had been called to assist. According to investigators, the suspect was inside the residence when he suddenly opened fire, striking the deputy multiple times. The second deputy was hit in the shoulder, and the locksmith was critically injured during the burst of gunfire.
Deputies returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was later taken to a hospital in critical condition. Despite immediate medical attention, the veteran deputy died from his injuries, marking only the second line-of-duty death in the sheriff’s office’s 100-year history.
Officials revealed that the tenant’s mother had requested the eviction after ongoing concerns about her son’s behavior and several unsuccessful attempts to remove him from the home. The responding deputies were not expecting a confrontation, as there had been no indications that the eviction would turn violent.
Sheriff’s officials described the fallen deputy as a deeply respected member of the department, known for his commitment to public service and his decades-long dedication to the community. The sheriff’s office has asked for prayers and support as investigators continue reviewing the events that led to the deadly exchange.
The wounded deputy is expected to recover, while the locksmith remains in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances behind the shooting.
