In a tragic incident near Princeton University, 31-year-old Matthew Hertgen has been charged with the murder of his younger brother, 26-year-old Joseph Hertgen, and the family cat. The alleged crime occurred late Saturday evening in a luxury apartment complex close to the Ivy League campus.

Authorities report that Matthew Hertgen contacted emergency services around 11:15 p.m., claiming there was a fire and a deceased individual in the residence. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Joseph’s body, showing signs of severe trauma inflicted by a knife and a golf club. The family cat was also found dead at the scene.

Both brothers were accomplished soccer players during their high school years at Toms River North High School. Joseph continued his athletic career at the University of Michigan, earning accolades for his performance on the field and in academics. He later pursued a career in finance, working as an analyst at Locust Point Capital. Matthew played soccer at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

Matthew Hertgen now faces charges including first-degree murder, weapons offenses, and animal cruelty. If convicted, he could receive a sentence ranging from 30 years to life imprisonment. The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the case, with an autopsy pending to determine the official cause of Joseph’s death.

Residents of the upscale Princeton community have expressed shock and disbelief over the incident, noting the area’s typically peaceful atmosphere. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover the motives behind this devastating event.
