Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis recently shared her personal feelings about the attacks she has faced while prosecuting former President Donald Trump. Willis disclosed during a private fundraiser that she has been affected by personal attacks and lies, especially since indicting Trump and 18 others over allegations of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.
Willis mentioned that she felt hurt and angry on some days due to these attacks. She noted that the “craziest” accusation she faced was that she was “sleeping with a gangbanger,” to which she humorously responded, “I like ’em old.” She reflected on these personal attacks, questioning why she was being targeted for doing her job.
Willis has been the subject of personal attacks and threats as a result of her investigation into Trump and others. The former president has used inflammatory language to describe his legal opponents, including Willis. Judges in some of the cases have issued gag orders to limit Trump’s public statements targeting prosecutors, court staff, and potential witnesses.
As Willis seeks re-election in Fulton County next year, she may appear on the same ballot as Trump if he secures the GOP’s presidential nomination. The trial for two co-defendants in the case begins next week, and Trump’s portion of the trial may follow, potentially extending the proceedings for at least a year or more.
