American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten expressed outrage following the Trump administration’s decision to significantly reduce the size and scope of the Department of Education. Weingarten described the action as a direct attack on public education and working families, accusing the administration of undermining the nation’s students and educators.
The controversial move, which includes eliminating several divisions and drastically slashing staff, was announced as part of a broader effort to reduce federal involvement in education and shift more control back to individual states. Officials argued the decision would cut bureaucracy and return power to local communities, allowing them to tailor education policies based on their unique needs.
Weingarten, however, criticized the plan as reckless and politically motivated. She warned that dismantling key programs designed to support disadvantaged students, protect students’ civil rights, and fund special education services would have long-lasting negative effects on millions of children nationwide.
The union leader vowed to mobilize teachers and parents in opposition, emphasizing that educators across the country are prepared to fight back against what she described as an assault on public schools. Weingarten accused the administration of prioritizing political agendas over the well-being of students and pledged continued efforts to protect public education.
