Residents of Georgia said that thieves go after residences early in the morning.

A homeowner in Georgia shot and killed an intruder who was trying to break into his house, and a neighbor contacted the police when the gunfire woke her up during breakfast.

Around 5:30 a.m., shots were fired. Fox 5 Atlanta said that on Thursday in DeKalb County, a man suspect was shot by an anonymous homeowner. He was taken to a nearby hospital but did not make it.

Melan Sydnor, who was preparing breakfast at the time, and other people in the neighborhood heard the gunshots.

“I was in the kitchen when I heard really loud gunshots,” Sydnor told Fox 5. “I heard a few gunshots, and then the police showed up about five minutes later.”

Joann Proctor, who also lives in the vicinity, said she was scared and that thieves are going after residences early in the morning.

“At night, around 4 or 5 in the morning, young men are walking around the neighborhood and checking doors,” Proctor added.

Police talked to the homeowner, who hasn’t been named either, and he went back to his house about noon. WSBTV said that he won’t be prosecuted since he was protecting himself and his house.

“I just think it’s sad for the country,” a neighbor who did not want to be named told the news source. “In this case, it was good that someone had a gun.”

Fox 5 says that the investigation into the incident is still going on. Police haven’t said why the suspect tried to break into the house or if the homeowner was the target.
