The Democratic Party has thought about putting Newsom in the White House in 2024.
At Florida’s New College on Wednesday, California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, kept criticizing Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, and his policies.
This was an unplanned stop on Newsom’s planned weeklong tour of Republican-led states, which he had previously banned. Newsom spoke to about a dozen New College students, teachers, and community members at the North Sarasota Public Library. He did this because DeSantis recently put forward six Republican board members.
“I’m literally giving up my body for you,” said Newsom. Please know that you are not on your own. You have value.
The governor didn’t just blame where DeSantis went to college; he also attacked his strict policies.
Governors in state after state are obsessed with making people look bad and different. This puts at risk the progress made in the last 50 years in areas like voting rights, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, abortion rights, and contraceptive rights. What Newsom had to say. All of his acts have one thing in common: he threatens and hurts people and groups that are weaker than him. You are on the right side of history and have moral authority, which he will never have.
At the start of the new year, DeSantis chose new board members. Christopher Rufo, a well-known critic of critical race theory, was one of them. People thought this was part of his larger plan to get rid of diversity and equality programs, critical race theory, and gender thinking in Florida’s public schools.
On Wednesday, DeSantis’ press secretary, Bryan Griffin, reacted to Newsom’s comments by saying, “Governor DeSantis is focused on getting Florida’s public colleges and universities back on track with academics and the truth.” The acts that political opponents pull have no point and don’t change anything.
Newsom has set up a political action group called the Campaign for Democracy to fight against Republican policies. He has already been to Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi to help Democratic candidates for governor. Some people think that Newsome might run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2024, and his campaign and PAC are seen as part of that attempt.
In November, he told Politico that he would still vote for President Biden in 2024.
“I’ve told everyone in the White House, from the chief of staff to the first lady,” he said. “I’m all in, count me in” for Biden’s return, he added.
By the same amount that Newsom won a second term as governor of California in 2022, DeSantis easily beat the Democratic candidate.
