Illinois Democratic congressional hopeful Kat Abughazaleh, 26, has been federally indicted for allegedly obstructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations during a September protest in suburban Chicago. The indictment accuses her of joining a crowd that deliberately blocked an unmarked SUV, bracing her body against the hood and preventing the vehicle from advancing.
The court filings charge Abughazaleh with conspiracy to prevent a federal officer from performing official duties and with forcibly impeding law enforcement action. The incident, captured on video and shared by the candidate herself, shows her at the forefront of the blockade and includes footage of onlookers defacing the vehicle’s exterior.
In reaction to the charges, Abughazaleh described the prosecution as a “political attack” against dissent, asserting her actions were protected First Amendment advocacy. Federal prosecutors, however, argue the evidence shows intentional interference with a legal ICE mission at a detention facility.
If found guilty, the charges carry significant penalties, including possible years in prison and substantial fines, intensifying scrutiny of the candidate’s campaign just ahead of the election.
