Inspired by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Representative George Santos
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) talked about the controversies surrounding his life before politics during an appearance on CNN’s Inside Politics with Manu Raju. Santos openly blamed human frailties and fears for these fabrications. The most startling information to emerge from the interview was that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was Santos’ unexpected source of inspiration for his political career.
Despite just being in politics for four years, Santos has revealed that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was a major inspiration for him to enter the field. He emphasized on his lack of political experience, saying, “I always felt like you needed to be a Kennedy, a Bush, or a Clinton to be in politics.” This reflected his general distaste for the Republican Party. I mean, look at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. This girl has the same roots as me! Okay, I’m on board with this. She has shown that it is possible for anyone to achieve this. No matter which way you turn.”
Santos’s acknowledgment of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as a source of motivation underlines the idea that political activity is not confined to established political dynasties. It’s more proof that people of all stripes and stripes of politics can find common ground in the most unlikely of settings.
In a different setting, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez brought up Santos’s history of lying about his background to highlight what she saw as Republican hypocrisy. This happened after Republican efforts to get Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) expelled for falsely activating a fire alarm.
Ocasio-Cortez pointed out the hypocrisy of Republicans uniting to defend a man who reportedly lied to the American people, the United States House of Representatives, and congressional investigators. Integrity, authenticity, and political partisanship are all intertwined, and the episodes and subsequent political discourse highlight the complexities and tensions of the political scene.
