In a surprising announcement to the Wall Street Journal, left-wing megadonor George Soros revealed that his 37-year-old son, Alexander Soros, will be taking the reins of the family’s massive $25 billion financial enterprise.
At 92 years old, George Soros made his fortune as a hedge fund manager, skillfully navigating global stock, bond, and currency markets in response to economic and political shifts. His Open Society Foundation has long been a significant supporter of leftist causes, generously donating around $1.5 billion annually to higher education institutions and political action committees worldwide. Soros is particularly known for funding PACs that advocate for law enforcement officials committed to reform.
Previously, Soros stated that none of his five children would be involved in running the company. However, he had a change of heart upon realizing that his son Alex possessed the necessary qualities to lead an organization that has provided financial support to various international leftist activist groups and educational institutions.
Speaking to the Journal, Soros expressed his confidence in Alex, stating, “He’s earned it.” He added, “Our minds are alike,” signifying their shared vision.
Alex, on his part, has publicly declared his intention to take a more active role in politics compared to his father, aiming to expand the family’s liberal social agenda.
“I’m more political,” Alex affirmed.
Following recent meetings with members of the Biden administration, Democratic lawmakers, and world leaders like Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Alex speculated that their group would play a significant financial role in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
“While I would love to see money removed from politics, as long as the opposing side engages in it, we will have to do the same,” he explained.
According to Federal Election Commission records cited by the New York Post, Alex has contributed nearly $11 million to left-wing PACs since 2010, including a $726,900 donation to the Biden Victory Fund for the 2020 election.
To expand the Democratic party’s appeal to Latino and black voters in primary and general elections, Alex argued that party officials should embrace a more patriotic and inclusive approach.
“Just because someone votes for Trump doesn’t mean they are lost or racist,” he emphasized.
Alex intends to utilize the organization to advocate for voting rights, abortion rights, and gender equality, as he believes universities and public spaces have become excessively censorious.
“I grew up watching Bill Maher before bed, so I have some differences with my generation regarding free speech and other issues,” he noted.
Reuters reported that Alex will assume the role of chairman of the Open Society Foundations in 2022.
In response to the news, billionaire Elon Musk took to Twitter, acknowledging that Alex has effectively been in charge for several years. Musk expressed a common ground on the importance of freedom of speech with Alex, but he urged against the selection of district attorneys who refuse to prosecute violent criminals in the interest of public safety.
Musk faced criticism for his tweets and issued an apology, stating, “I’d like to apologize for this post. That was really unjust to Magneto.”
He went on to describe Soros as someone who seeks to undermine the very fabric of civilization. Quoting a saying, Musk commented, “Soros hates humanity,” in reference to a critic.
The future leadership transition within the Soros family and the expanding influence of Alexander Soros in political and philanthropic spheres will undoubtedly be closely observed by many.
