Rudy Giuliani, 81, a former mayor of New York City, was gravely hurt in an automobile accident in New Hampshire late Saturday when he stopped to help a woman who was allegedly escaping domestic abuse. Giuliani’s car was hit from behind at great speed on Manchester’s Interstate 93 after he acted like a good Samaritan by dialing 911 and waiting for assistance.

He was taken by emergency personnel to a trauma center, where medical professionals determined that he had suffered injuries to his left arm and lower leg, several scratches and bruises, and a fractured thoracic vertebra. Despite the seriousness, Giuliani is “in good spirits, conscious, alert and strong,” according to his security chief, and is anticipated to be released in a few days.

The incident was not a targeted attack, according to authorities, and they are still looking into it. There are no charges pending.
