Mark Schmitz, the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz who was killed during the terrorist attack at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan, delivered a scathing condemnation of President Joe Biden during a roundtable discussion with other Gold Star family members before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Schmitz accused Biden of being a “disgrace to this nation” and criticized his handling of the situation in Afghanistan.
Schmitz expressed his anger and frustration towards Biden, stating that he is a “disgrace” and has “more American blood” on his hands “than any president in U.S. history.” He criticized Biden’s leadership and decision-making, particularly regarding the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the aftermath of the terrorist attack.
Schmitz also shared his personal experience during the dignified transfer of his son’s remains and accused Biden of disrespecting the fallen service members. He mentioned an instance when he saw Biden repeatedly checking his watch during the transfer, which further added to his frustration.
He demanded accountability and investigations into Biden, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken for their roles in leaving Bagram Air Base and aiding known terrorists, as well as for abandoning U.S. civilians and allied partners.
Schmitz’s emotional testimony reflected the sentiments of many Gold Star families who have criticized the administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal and the lack of transparency and accountability. Other Gold Star family members also expressed their concerns and frustrations during the hearing, highlighting the impact of the decisions made by the administration on their lives and the lives of their loved ones.
Both General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Pentagon released statements expressing condolences to the Gold Star families and acknowledging their sacrifices. Milley emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability for the families, while the Pentagon defended the decisions made during the evacuation operations and the investigation into the attack.
Overall, the testimony of Gold Star family members and their criticisms of the administration’s actions highlighted the deep emotional toll of the Afghanistan withdrawal and its tragic consequences.
