In a heartfelt expression of frustration and grief, Shana Chappell, the mother of a Marine who tragically lost his life during the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, criticized the arrest of her ex-husband for publicly confronting President Joe Biden during his State of the Union address. Chappell, whose son, Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, was killed by a suicide bomber outside Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on August 26, 2021, called the arrest of the Gold Star father “complete BS” and an unwarranted response to a father’s anguish and desire for accountability.
Chappell revealed that she was aware of her ex-husband, Steve Nikoui’s, intention to disrupt Biden’s speech as a form of protest and fully supported his planned act of defiance. The incident unfolded when Steve Nikoui shouted “Abbey Gate” during the president’s address, referencing the location where their son was killed. He was subsequently arrested on charges typically associated with minor disruptions, a response that Chappell and many others found disproportionate given the circumstances.
The Gold Star mother shared her deep-seated belief that the Biden administration bears responsibility for her son’s death and the unbearable pain that followed, including the suicide of another son, Dakota Halverson, in August 2022. Chappell’s despair and call for accountability extend beyond the immediate repercussions of the Afghanistan withdrawal, criticizing the administration’s handling of broader national issues such as border security, homelessness, crime, and inflation.
Looking ahead, Chappell voiced her support for Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election, reflecting her dissatisfaction with the current administration’s leadership. Despite the profound loss and ongoing struggle to find peace, Chappell’s unwavering demand for recognition and justice for her son and the other fallen heroes of that fateful day remains a poignant reminder of the personal toll extracted by national policy decisions and the importance of leadership accountability.
