Former Biden aide Andrew Bates faced a fierce blowback from Republican members of the House Oversight Committee during his appearance before investigators probing the use of an autopen for key executive actions.
In his opening remarks, Bates defended President Biden’s leadership, asserting it was universally understood within the White House that Biden remained in charge. Instead of addressing the committee’s concerns, he pivoted by criticizing the panel for focusing attention on Biden while minimizing comparisons to Trump-era controversies.
Republican committee officials fired back, calling Bates’s comments “delusional” and accusing him of peddling misleading narratives intended to distract from the serious issues at hand—including whether key decisions were issued via autopen without Biden’s full awareness.
Oversight Chairman James Comer’s ongoing investigation centers on the legitimacy of hundreds of clemency orders and other executive actions signed by autopen during the final months of Biden’s term. Republicans continue to demand clarity on whether these documents were reviewed and authorized by the president himself, or if executive power was being exercised without his direct consent.
