During a recent appearance on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” Representative Ken Buck (R-CO) expressed his views on the impeachment discussion surrounding Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Buck labeled it as “impeachment theater,” suggesting that it was a political maneuver aimed at diverting attention from upcoming appropriations bills.
According to Buck, the Republican party is currently divided on the appropriate budget numbers for the appropriations process. McCarthy had made different promises regarding the numbers, causing a lack of consensus within the party. To solidify his credibility and unite the party, McCarthy is using the impeachment talk as a distraction tactic.
Buck clarified that it’s not just conservatives like him who are being targeted but also the general public. The strategy, as he sees it, is to create a shiny object of controversy, thereby diverting focus from spending bills that are a matter of concern for many, given the significant impact of national spending on the country’s future.
When asked if there are any legitimate reasons for the House Republican majority to pursue an impeachment inquiry, Buck expressed reservations, stating that discussions about impeachment set certain expectations and send a specific message to the public. He believes it is not responsible to raise the issue of impeachment lightly. However, he acknowledged that the Oversight and Judiciary Committees are appropriately fulfilling their responsibilities with ongoing investigations.
