A mass shooting erupted Sunday morning at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, when a man drove a pickup truck through the church’s front and began firing on congregants. He then reportedly set the building on fire.
Law enforcement identified the suspect as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, of nearby Burton. Sanford was shot and killed by responding officers in a brief gun battle.
Authorities say at least four people were killed and eight others wounded in the attack. The church sustained severe fire damage, and officials believe more victims might still be discovered amid the charred remains.
Officials confirmed that hundreds of worshipers were present during the violence, and investigators are treating the incident as an act of targeted violence. Motive remains under investigation.
State and federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are now assisting in the investigation.
