Hamas has announced plans to release six Israeli hostages and return the bodies of four deceased individuals, including Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir. This development is part of an accelerated phase of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.
The Bibas family was abducted from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October 2023 Gaza conflict. Shiri and her children were reportedly held by the Mujahideen Brigades, a separate militant group within Gaza. In November 2023, Hamas claimed that Shiri and her sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike, a statement that Israeli authorities have not confirmed. Yarden Bibas, Shiri’s husband, was released earlier this month.
The planned release includes six living hostages, among them individuals taken from a music festival and the community of Kibbutz Beeri, as well as two who crossed into Gaza years earlier. This exchange is part of broader ceasefire negotiations aiming to end the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
The current ceasefire, initiated in mid-January, has temporarily halted hostilities. Discussions are ongoing regarding a second phase, which aims to secure the release of remaining hostages and establish lasting peace, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, political divisions within Israel and differing international perspectives add complexity to these negotiations.
The return of the Bibas family’s bodies and the release of additional hostages are scheduled for later this week, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict and address humanitarian concerns.
