In a recent development, Hamas has released three Israeli hostages, including American citizen Sagui Dekel-Chen, amidst a delicate cease-fire agreement that was on the brink of collapse. The hostages—Dekel-Chen, Alexander Troufanov, and Yair Horn—were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza.
During a propaganda event in Khan Yunis, Hamas presented Horn with an hourglass, symbolizing that “time is running out” for another captive, Matan Zangauker. This act was perceived as psychological warfare aimed at the families of those still detained.
The cease-fire faced significant challenges when Hamas accused Israel of violating the truce by restricting aid into Gaza. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with support from President Donald Trump, issued an ultimatum demanding the release of all hostages by a specified deadline. Following intense negotiations mediated by Egypt and Qatar, Hamas complied, leading to the release of the three hostages.
The hostages were abducted from Kibbutz Nir Or during a Hamas attack in October 2023. Dekel-Chen, whose wife gave birth during his captivity, expressed joy upon learning about his newborn daughter. Horn’s brother remains in captivity, while Troufanov’s family endured multiple losses during the initial assault.
The ongoing cease-fire, initiated in January, has temporarily halted 15 months of conflict. However, its future remains uncertain, contingent on further negotiations and the potential release of additional hostages. Netanyahu faces internal pressure to resume military operations and consider resettlement plans for Gaza’s population, amid regional reluctance to accept Palestinian refugees.
