Senator Josh Hawley sharply criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday, accusing him of overseeing a covert surveillance campaign targeting the Biden family—a probe he likened to an intelligence agency run amok.
At a press event, Hawley claimed the investigation amounts to “digital Stasi tactics” and an abuse of prosecutorial power that “makes Watergate look like child’s play.” He urged Congress to demand a full accounting of Smith’s methods, including whether wiretaps or secret warrants were used without sufficient oversight.
Smith has yet to respond publicly to Hawley’s allegations. The senator’s comments add fuel to ongoing debates in Washington about the balance between national security, legal authority, and privacy rights.
