New York City’s 2025 mayoral election has seen early participation surge past 1.8 million votes—already exceeding the total turnout of the 2021 race with hours still remaining before polls close.
Officials reported that approximately 1 million votes were cast in person on Election Day, while about 850,000 were submitted via early or mail-in ballots, bringing the current tally well above last cycle’s full count.
The spike in participation comes amid an intensely competitive race featuring three prominent candidates—one of whom could become the city’s first Muslim mayor. With nearly four hours left before polls shut down, election administrators expect the final number to challenge turnout records that have stood for decades.
