Reports indicate that a unity government agreement has been reached in Israel. Following the surprise attack by Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition is said to have reached an agreement in principle with main opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz to form an emergency unity government. According to a joint statement by Netanyahu and Gantz, they will create a five-member “war-management” cabinet, which will not pass any legislation or decisions unrelated to the war as long as fighting continues. The move toward a unity government reflects the urgent need for opposition parties to unite in response to the ongoing conflict. Gantz had called for a small war cabinet with “real influence” and members with high levels of military experience.
