Britain’s Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has publicly disclosed that she has been the target of rising racist abuse and threats since assuming office.
Mahmood described being subjected to vile remarks, including being told to “go back to your own country,” remarks she says reflect a broader spike in hostile behaviour toward public figures from minority backgrounds. She also stated the threat level for her and her immediate family has increased, prompting additional security measures.
In response, the Home Office affirmed it is reviewing protective arrangements and is working closely with law-enforcement and intelligence agencies to investigate the abuse. Community leaders have voiced concern, saying the incidents point to a wider problem of intolerance that must be addressed at both social and governmental levels.
Mahmood underlined that the abuse does not deter her from serving but reinforced the urgency of her commitment to tackling racial hostility, safeguarding citizens and preserving public confidence in government institutions.
