Tragedy struck during Leland, Mississippi’s high school homecoming celebration overnight, as a downtown shooting left four people dead and 12 others injured.

The incident unfolded amid large crowds gathered to mark the occasion. Chaos reportedly erupted when gunshots broke out near the heart of the festivities. First responders responded swiftly, finding multiple victims and transporting them to nearby hospitals.

Leland’s mayor issued condolences to the victims’ families, calling the violence “senseless.” The suspect remains at large, prompting a statewide alert.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and FBI have joined the probe, assisting local law enforcement in the search for leads and potential motives.

This event has rattled the community — once known for its peaceful, family-centered homecoming traditions — and ignited calls for tougher measures to curb gun violence in public gatherings.
