A New York City man experiencing homelessness was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of a holiday shopper inside a Manhattan bookstore, authorities said.
Police identified the suspect as a 49-year-old man living on the streets who allegedly attacked a 60-year-old woman inside the Barnes & Noble on West 18th Street late Saturday. The victim, who was shopping during the busy holiday season, sustained multiple stab wounds and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
According to law enforcement sources, the suspect had been in the store prior to the attack and reportedly left briefly before returning and confronting the victim. Witnesses told investigators the assault seemed unprovoked, with the suspect acting in a sudden, aggressive manner.
Officers responding to emergency calls found the victim bleeding inside the bookstore. They secured the scene and took the suspect into custody nearby. Police say the investigation remains active as they work to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the deadly encounter.
Authorities also indicated that the suspect’s mental state and history of coping with life on the streets will be part of the ongoing inquiry. No additional suspects have been identified, and charges in the case include second-degree murder.
The deadly incident has shaken the community and reignited concerns about public safety in and around crowded retail spaces during the holiday season. City officials urged vigilance but stressed that such acts of violence remain rare in New York City’s bookstores and other public venues.
