The House Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), has issued a subpoena to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. This move comes amid allegations of misconduct, specifically the misuse of federal funds in Georgia and the firing of a whistleblower from her office who raised concerns over this issue.
Willis has been in the spotlight for charging former President Donald Trump with attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The subpoena demands documents related to the Fulton County DA’s office’s receipt and use of federal funds from various Department of Justice programs, as well as communications pertaining to any allegations of federal funds misuse.
Responding to the subpoena, Willis’s office dismissed the allegations as “false” and “baseless,” attributing them to litigation filed by an employee who was terminated for cause. The office stressed that any scrutiny of their grant programs would reveal their effectiveness and compliance with Department of Justice requirements. Willis highlighted the federal grant-funded Sexual Assault Kit Initiative as a model program, showcasing the office’s dedication to assisting at-risk youth and seeking justice for sexual assault victims.
This subpoena follows multiple requests from the Judiciary Committee for these documents in August, September, and December of 2023, none of which were voluntarily complied with by Willis’s office. The Committee’s letter emphasized the relevance of their oversight in light of whistleblower allegations that Willis’s office misappropriated part of a $488,000 federal grant intended for helping at-risk youths on unrelated expenses, including Macbooks, clothing, and travel.
The ongoing scrutiny of Willis’s office underscores the House Judiciary Committee’s efforts to ensure the responsible use of federal funding, particularly in light of serious allegations of misuse. This development adds another layer to the complex legal challenges facing Willis, who leads the case against Trump.
