House Judiciary and Oversight Committee Democrats allege that President Donald Trump is seeking approximately $230 million from the Department of Justice through an administrative-claims process to compensate himself for past federal investigations.
In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy AG Todd Blanche and senior DOJ official Stanley Woodward, the lawmakers described the move as “a blatantly illegal and unconstitutional attempt to pilfer taxpayer funds.”
Trump has publicly stated he believes the department owes him money for investigations such as the 2024 search of his residence and the 2016 Russia-interference probe. Seniors on the committee warn that the claims could be processed without immediate disclosure to Congress.
Democrats are now demanding full access to communications and documents surrounding the claim and are exploring ethical and legal pathways if the payout proceeds.
